Tim is researching ways to improve the properties of Red Fluorescent Proteins (RFPs). He uses computational tools, multiple sequence alignments, and intuition-based design to create large libraries of RFP mutants that are screened with a variety of high-throughput techniques. Libraries of RFP variants are designed to be enriched for desired characteristics, which include monomericity, brightness, and far-red excitation and emission wavelengths. He has created a family of new far-red, monomeric variants of HcRed, which he calls the mGingers.
